Lonely Planet Farsi Persian Phrasebook Lonely Planet Phrasebooks Lonely Planet 9781741040609 Books Reviews

  • I gave this book to my husband who is not a native speaker (which I am). It's a good book with very helpful phrases in it!

My one issue is that a lot of the phrases are outdated or so exceedingly formal that no one would say them. But for the money, this is definitely a great purchase!
  • This phrasebook is a good resource for someone wanting to learn some Persian phrases and words. I should caution, however, that if you are wanting to use this book in Afghanistan, it will not serve your purpose. The Afghans speak Dari, a dialect of Farsi. Many Afghans understand Farsi just fine. However, the dialect is different enough that it will be confusing for you (and probably them). I'd suggest buying a Dari phrasebook. They sell them at Kabul's Airport. Using this Persian phrasebook provided a little bit of comedic relief as I was asked why I said things in such a "fancy" way. One interpreter said its almost like hearing a person from the UK speak English versus a person from the American south speak English. Same basic language but very, very different.
  • Awesome for the beginner to even advanced, great phrase book. Tons of good info as well. I've got well over 20 Farsi phrase books, dictionaries, study guides, and so on. This little guy is by far my favorite.
  • This is a great little pocket sized quick reference guide for Farsi. It has about 18 categories of phrases and vocabulary, written in both English letters and Farsi script, and a mini dictionary in the back. A lot of good info is contained in this little 3X5" book!
  • As a student of Persian language and literature, I had some serious issues with this book. The written Persian component to the words/phrases is full of spelling mistakes. The (colloquial) pronunciation is not always consistent with itself, nor always correct, and a few of the words/phrases are a bit quaint. The book provides a great introduction to the grammar of Persian, but its explanation of Arabic plurals is misleading.

That being said, this book offers lots of great vocabulary, as well as many useful phrases that are, for the most part, idiomatically correct and commonly used. This book would prove indispensible to any traveller, and it is a good overall guide to Persian language and culture. I would, however, caution serious students of Persian not to rely too much on this book.
  • What a good move I made by purchasing this book FROM !!!
I will be traveling out to the Middle East this year and have been trying to catch up with my Persian language, better known as Farsi. I have been receiving some tutoring, which was very well received, but this book has put me right on to where I want to be.
You will find this Persian phrasebook suitable for travelers with all those important questions you will need to ask at the airport, in the market when purchasing items, finding your way around, almost anything for that matter. I highly recommend this book to those traveling to the East and please keep it on you for easy reference. It is such a handy book and can fit right into the smallest pocket book or jeans pocket. Well done!!!

  • *My wife is a native speaker.
For years I have struggled at family gatherings only knowing a few words. I have a Persian English Dictionary but do not read Persian, though my wife finds it very helpful.
This book is a good starting point, I love the fact that it has phonetic pronunciation. I have some hearing loss so it has been a challenge for me to get things right. Already this book has helped me, I've only owned it a week now.
*My wife was impressed with the variety of phrases. She was equally impressed with the 3500 word dictionary.
I must say that for less than $8 this was money well spent.
I would recommend this to any serviceman going to Afghanistan as a way to get more familiar with the locals.
  • LONELY PLANET always produces good work. At least for everything I have purchased. My friends ask me how I learned Farsi so fast. I tell them that I didn't but I just use this phrasebook. They said but a phrasebook can't teach perfect pronunciation! I just smile!
