The Physician Scientist Career Guide 9781603279079 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • I'm a foreign graduate currently pursuing MS in translational science degree in US. I had a chance to attend Physician Scientist regional meeting over a month ago, which inspired me to choose this career pathway, as a practicing physician and as a clinical researcher. I looked for a career guide online and found this book which was published recently. By the time i am writing this review, i haven't finished reading it yet. Yet i found this career guide an incredible, motivating book which exactly shadows me the way which i want to pursue. I would like to thank Dr. Mark J. Eisenberg for his effort to write this book and am really impressed with his career life.
  • Dr. Eisenberg has done a superb job in being able to mentor students and other faculty that are not physically able to work with him. I commend for this excellent practical book.
  • My wife searched for a book to assist me in my goal of becoming a physician scientist. The 'mentors' I had met myself were less than forthcoming or often cryptic. Academia appeared to be an inaccessible and aloof club restricted to those in certain institutions and of a particular background. Some of the other articles and books out there have much of the information, but the authors are unable to pitch what are the critical ingredients for success. There are great books and articles which offer guidance for those wanting to become pure scientists. However, this is the only book I know of which focuses on those pursuing a dual physician and scientist role.
The style is straight-talking and 'straight from the hip'. Dr. Eisenberg writes very candidly and with honesty, including important examples from his own life. He focuses on the key issues mentorship, interests, grantsmanship and publication (including what is expected by journal editors). To round it off, there is a section on work-life balance and spending time with family.
In short, an excellent book, easy to read and full of golden nuggets of advice. I hope one day to meet Dr. Eisenberg and personally thank him.
  • From balancing family life to learning how to lecture, this book has the whole range! Great quality of writing. It is clear, concise and has a good balance between examples and concepts. Highly recommended for anyone wondering what it takes to be a leader in healthcare.
  • During my undergraduate degree, I developed a passion for research through my work in different research labs. I will be starting medical school in the Fall, but I want research to be a part of my career as a physician. My mom gave me this book and I found it to be incredibly informative. After reading this book, I feel better equipped to realize my dream of being a physician-scientist. In addition to outlining the steps to becoming an physician-researcher, Dr. Eisenberg also provides personal anecdotes that identify what to do and not to do in order to achieve success. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever even contemplated a career as a clinician-scientist!
