• this is not a comprehensive review since i have not read most of the essays in this book, and i am not a historian by training. but i am an enthusiastic reader of gibbon's "decline and fall", and the first essay, "gibbon's historical imagination", is worth the cost of the book to me. other readers, more knowledgable and widely read than myself, will, no doubt, enjoy the essays on cavafy, auden, and other moderns.
