Reef Fishes of the IndoPacific Matthias Bergbauer Manuela Kirschner 9781909612310 Books Reviews
- This book covers 800 species of marine fishes in the Indo-Pacific region. The pictures are all good quality and show fishes in their natural environment. The paper is high quality, and that makes the pictures extremely sharp. Beside each picture, there is a brief description of the species. Scientific name, English common name, size and distribution are given. This is one of the lowest priced fish identification book on the market.
It is not very comprehensive. Many common species that are often seen in fish market are not listed. Perhaps those schooling fishes are not easily found in reef. Gerry Allen's Marine fishes of Southeast Asia covers twice as many species, and contains many species that are not in Bergbauer's book. But Allen's book has only color illustrations, not color photos. - Having read this field guide, I can still comprehend the diversity of tropical reef fishes found in the Indo-Pacific, with top-quality, close-up photographs of each species accompanied by details on identifying features, size, biology and distribution. However, I was somehow disappointed that this book doesn't include certain endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, given that Hawaii is part of the Indo-Pacific realm, and it was strange for sea mammals, invertebrates, and sea reptiles to be included in this guide because this book is supposed to be about reef fishes only.
- Outstanding book, just very large. There is a half-hearted attempt to have some invertebrates in it, but that part is too limiting to really be useful.
Obviously no book of this type will have every species, but this book isn't half bad. Good photography generally. Could be thinner if the book had smaller images, but then there is good range and biological info here (same page) so you have to live with the weight. - Exactly what I wanted for upcoming diving in the Philippines.
- Very helpful for snorkelers and scientific workers
- Awesome!!!
